Retrofitting a home to reduce the amount of energy it uses is often high on the priority list of homeowners. One way to make the most informed choices about which technologies to use is to find out all you can about solar power information and other green methods of reducing our energy consumption.

You may have heard of green power sources such as wind power and hydro electricity. These are also great sources of green energy but the problem is that they cannot often be adjusted in order to make them suit residential use. Solar power is different. Panels can easily be added to many homes in order to reduce the amount of energy that is being used.

There are actually two different types of systems that use solar energy. A panel can generate an electrical charge. This kind of panel is called a photovoltaic panel. If the power is not immediately used it can be stored for a period of time. The large batteries or power cells can help you by providing power even when the sun is not in the sky.

Solar energy can heat water which is then used in one of two ways. One way is as a supply of hot water. That water can be used to heat homes through radiators and radiant heating systems. The other is to heat water to the boiling point. The steam that results can then be used to generate electricity.

Solar panels can be used in areas that may surprise you. It is often possible to install panels on the top of a garage or shed, or on a deck. All that is needed is an area that is large enough to hold the panel and which is not obstructed by buildings, trees or other solid structures. Even when there is less solar radiation (such as during the winter months) it is often possible to still get all the power you need from these panels.

You may want to do a bit more research before you go ahead and buy your panel system. You need to ensure that it will generate the level of power you need and that it can supply you with enough heated water if that is the system type that you are interested in. It can be a good idea to consider starting on a smaller scale perhaps through the manufacture and use of a small scale solar panel system. These kinds of small-scale systems are easy to make using a few everyday items.

If you have decided that you want to learn more about solar panels such as the cost, installation requirements and where to purchase the kits, the internet may be your best bet for information. Learning as much as you can may help you save money and time in the long run.
